23: Rio

Bella was still gone when I opened my eyes the next morning.

I didn’t like her being out there alone, not when so much had transpired of late. Normally, I wasn’t someone that gave chase, but like it or not, concern eventually overwhelmed my stubbornness. I found myself searching for her not long after I woke.

I checked the courtyard first—the dry expanse of dirt and shadow was dotted with people in the early cool of morning, but none of them were the woman that I wanted. I checked the gym next, the scent of steel and concrete as familiar as the tattoos upon my own skin. Lumen was there, checking off the names of the bulked-out gangsters that used my equipment. As my second in command, he kept an eye on the place when he wasn’t cooking.

He shook his head when I asked him. “I’ve been hearing rumors though. The Razors are angry about something.”

“They’re always angry.”

“No, this is something new. Apparently, a gringa has been fucking with their product.”

A shiver ran through me. A white woman. I thanked him and hurried away. The Razors dealt in women. What had Bella’s too kind heart got her into now?

Hallways, stairwells, I even checked the women’s restrooms, pushing gruffly inside to call her name. Bella was nowhere to be seen.

I was searching an ancillary courtyard when I suddenly stopped. Had she left? Had she just got up and walked out of the prison? It wouldn’t be the first time it’d happened.

Nightmares of Elizabeth still haunted my dreams. Of her laughing on those courtroom steps.

I shook my head. No. Bella wasn’t like that. And she’d had no reason to use me, like that other woman had.

I was anxiously scanning the cafeteria when Diego found me. He approached from the side, throwing me roughly against the wall. An arm pushed against my throat. Cold metal pricked at my skin. “You owe me, vato.”

I looked down to note the homemade shiv—a spoon that had been sharpened to a point. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

I growled and flexed, pushing up from the wall. “And I don’t like your attitude.”

Diego tried to keep me pinned but I was taller than him by a foot. My biceps were almost as large as his head. Whispers were starting to spread through the cafeteria. A fight! Soon all noise had stopped. When he realized holding me was futile, he sprang back, his weapon in front of him.

“Your bitch turned one of my girls away,” Diego said into the silence. “Says she’s not putting out for my clients anymore.”

I growled, my fists clenching. I should smash him for that. Screw my own rules about fighting in the cafeteria—it would be worth it to see his nose break. I kept my temper only with effort. Only because I hadn’t yet found Bella.

“I don’t know who you’re calling a bitch,” I said, through gritted teeth. “'Cause if you were to say that about Bella, I’d have to rip your balls off. So, I’m pretty sure we’re not talking about her.
